Silver Snag

Silver Snag

The mountain forests have scattered among them an assortment of silver snags … trees have that died and remained standing. The wood bleaches out and the wood takes on a beautiful silver color that is difficult to show on a web post. This one is in the Hurricane Ridge area of Olympic National Park.

More Wildflowers

A clump of Mountain Bluebells

Another group of wildflowers from the Hurricane Ridge area of Olympic National Park. One of the advantages of the area is the road running up to over 5000′ … and the only high country access via motor vehicle in the park. That translates into a pretty crowded area.

Alaska Rein-Orchid

Alaska Rein-orchid

A visit to the high country of the Olympic National Park in the summer takes you to wildflower heaven. There are lots of very showy wildflowers, but there are also some that may not be showy, but are favorites, non the less. The non showy orchid here is one of my favorites in that category.

had a problem with the post schedule. Sorry this is a little late….

Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center in Winter

Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center by Allan J Jones Photography
Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center

The Olympic National Park includes a road that runs up to Hurricane Ridge at an elevation of over 5000 feet. During the winter it is the only ski area on the Olympic Peninsula… it’s small but it attracts a lot of folks, even though there is only a rope tow and no actual lift. On days when there’s a view, it is spectacular. This view looks across the Elwha Valley to the central Bailey Range.

I had been shooting with my zoom lens out to 400mm … and had the ISO and shutter speed set for that lens. When I changed the lens back to the wide angle zoom, I forgot to readjust the settings until after I had shot this.

Icy Fir Branch

Icy Fir Branch

I was waiting for the sun to break through a clearing to blacklight the snow and ice on this fir. My fingers started getting really cold. I was just about to give up when the sun came through for just about 5 seconds.

The Bailey Range from Hurricane Ridge

Bailey Range from Hurricane Ridge

I was up at Hurricane Ridge (Olympic National Park) with my snowshoes and camera on President’s Day Monday. It never cleared off completely, but I was able to get a view across the valley of the Elwha to the central part of the Bailey Range.
