(some kind of) Lily

DSC_0094

I wish I was as familiar with garden flowers as I am with the wild flowers of Washington State. I know it’s a member of the lily family and I know some of its wild relatives. This beauty was at Bloedel Reserve (Bainbridge Island, Washington State).

Skunk Cabbage

DSC_0106

I found this skunk cabbage, which has gone to seed, at Bloedel Reserve on 4 August. For those unfamiliar with skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanus), it does smell remarkably similar to skunk … but primarily when in bloom. The blooms are around in spring and while the flowers are very small on an upright spike … the bracts are large and bright yellow.

View of Field

Grass Field, Bloedel Reserve by Allan J Jones Photographer
Grass Field, Bloedel Reserve

Photo from Bloedel Reserve (Bainbridge Island, WA). It is a challenge getting a good photo of tall grass. I was lucky to have pretty bright sun (through some cloud cover) and could keep the ISO at 100, while shooting at 1/250 of a second to stop the motion of the grass from the light breeze with an aperture of f/8.0 to keep depth of field,

Oxalis

Photo from Bloedel Reserve (Bainbridge Island, WA). This isolated bloom in the middle of a field of oxalis attracted my attention. It was dark enough that I needed a tripod.

This photo is from Bloedel Reserve (Bainbridge Island, WA). There is a Japanese Tea House with some wonderful gates. I was standing in the middle of a gate and noticed the rocks used for the gateway walkway.
